WMost people forget eye cream in their daily skin regimen. It may not seem important now, but once you start to see those crow’s feet, you’ll regret you ever forgot the eye cream. Why is eye cream so important? In this blog I’m going to explain the process of the skin around the eye and how to specifically use an eye cream.
The skin around our eyes age very quickly, why is that? The skin in this area is very thin, therefore the tissues damage much easier. This causes them to stretch easier also. The more collagen in the skin, the “thicker” the skin is. What is collagen? Collagen is a protein mostly in the connective tissues. It strengthens bones and gives skin its framework.
What Causes Dark Circles:
When collagen is lost, veins show through under the eye. The skin becomes thinner with a loss of collagen. But why does this sometimes come from lack of sleep? Lack of sleep can cause poor circulation. This makes blood pool up underneath the eyes, causing dark circles.
What Causes Puffiness:
Lack of sleep and stress in the life can trigger the histamine in our body to release. (This is a response to create inflammation). The blood vessels around our eyes will inflame and be very prominent due to thin skin.
How to Prevent these Things:
I’m a hypocrite if I said that I prevent these things through good sleep. I’m a night owl and love to stay up if I don’t work. You can prevent the bags and dark circles by just getting one extra hour of sleep! If you have a Fitbit or Apple Watch, use this to track your sleep. Make a goal every night to get an extra 10 minutes of sleep every day, then you’ll add that hour on!
A good eye cream consists of many ingredients that prevent all of these eye skin issues. After I did some research, I found out some of the best ingredients to look for:
Retinol: Retinol is also known as Vitamin A. This boosts collagen in the skin which strengthens that thin skin. Remember that we lose collagen when we wrinkle. Mostly, try to be careful in the sun if you use this ingredient.
Neuropeptides: This ingredient does the same as retinol, boosting collagen.
Vitamins: Vitamin C and E are both anti-aging. Vitamin E protects the skin and prevents inflammation. Vitamin C helps with collagen and elasticity. If the elasticity is improved, the skin will not break as easy.
How to Apply:
Recently, I researched that using the ring finger for eye cream may be a myth, BUT I still do it just in case. Our ring finger is the most delicate finger out of the five. Our eyes are also delicate, therefore we must not be rough on them. The least used finger would be the best option, ring finger. Do not pull on the eyes when using eye cream. Tap the eye cream in with the ring finger.
